Reader believes clerk practices “Catch-22”

April 17, 2008

To the Editor:

Sparta township clerk Miriam Tower just gave us a lesson in Catch 22 logic.

She rejects the petition requesting that residents be given the right to opt out of the mandatory garbage ordinance because there is no wording in the ordinance referring to “opt out.” Yet, the ordinance as written is mandatory for all residents (with certain private interests excepted).

“Catch-22,” is a reference to a bureaucratic catch, which embodies multiple illogical and immoral reasoning and which itself is an absurd joke: namely, that bureaucratic nonsense has gotten to such a high level that even the catches are codified with numbers. Joseph Heller, roll over!
