What goes around comes around

January 24, 2008

To the Editor:

The Sparta Township council will soon either let this garbage ordinance be dropped or plow through it dragging everybody with them willingly or not at the cost of $15,000.

On Monday’s New Jersey Herald we finally have heard from someone of the majority speak out for the Sparta garbage. Thank you. At least my plea is not going on deaf ears. I’m glad to know there are those of you who care enough to speak up for what you believe as I have been doing. I have been to at least three town meetings and not once did they have any authorized representative from Blue Diamond Company there, so we might ask the questions that the town seems unable to answer when we asked. Were they told not to worry, it is going through?

If it goes for a vote why won’t the town permit those of us to have an opt-out now from those who want it? I want my neighbors and friends to have garbage pickup as often as they want but won’t they also give us the freedom to not be forced to pay for their garbage and mine? Knowing the price will go up after three years and I still won’t be able to say no to it. Right now it is only $20 a month. Sounds good to me but what happens when it goes up to $50 a month for $600 a year by 2010, due to surcharges; you can count on it. Nothing I can do will stop having my garbage picked up at this increase, no matter what. People who are now paying $400 to $600 are doing it by choice but could take it to the county landfill at $60 or $470 a year.

Think in these terms as I had to do...What would happen if during the next few years you lose the major bread winner in your home. I did in 1993 and had to pay all bills by myself. I’m looking at being in the red much of the time, but that is OK because if I can’t pay the $240 or $600 for garbage or the taxes on our house the town will gladly put a lien on my house plus interest. Put yourself in this situation and wonder what will you do?

Missing in this budget is our never-ending prescriptions cost and food but that really doesn’t count because maybe I can go to the local food banks and beg for free food. Sell my car so I won’t have to pay gas and upkeep on it and beg from my neighbors to give me a ride.

Something else, Sparta Council, you arc not taking in account. “What goes around comes around.” You want us to recycle at home yet aren’t making the local business do any recycling The laws are for all of us will you put a lean against them?

Beware “The baby boomers” are due to come into their own Social Security withdrawals and the US government keeps saying we are going to run out of our Social Security, so what do you suggest we pay our bills with? Is there really so “much money” in the S.S. budget that they should use it for every one like the illegals. Why should the “snowbirds” have to pay during those months away for utilities and garbage not picked up?

Wake up! Vote to have your garbage picked up but let those of us who want to opt out get out while the getting is still good and we can handle our bills.

Both of my husbands served willingly in the US Navy, one during WW11 and one during the Korean war for our U.S. freedom. Why are the councilmen being so bull-headed, our freedom is the real issue? Again our soldier’s arc still dying for us in other countries again to protect our freedom. I am fighting for our freedom in Sparta Township. Ask your Sparta Council to permit a vote that will be fair to all of us.
