Reader won’t pay

December 20, 2007

To the Editor:

I feel the garbage collection problem for Sparta Township was sufficiently controversial to have included an “opt out” clause or have been put to a referendum vote on the matter. So saying, I now wish to state that I have no intention of paying for something I do not use or have no intention of using.

This includes the garbage collection fee of $230 that the Sparta Town Council voted to impose on all township households. By taking the easy way out, by not allowing an opt out clause they are intentionally forcing many older people of small households, who cannot afford this charge to subsidize those majority households who can.

In order to collect this charge they are going to have to sue me, at which time I will take the matter to court and let the court decide what would have been a fair decision for them to have made. If others wish to join me hi this, we can make it a class action defense. To me, personally, its’ not so much the $230 that counts, its’ the principal of the thing.
