Reader advises council to inform the people of new ideas

January 31, 2008

To the Editor:

Whatever one’s position on the trash vendor issue, the fact is that the good folks in power in Sparta went about it all wrong. I’m a political consultant and 25 year Sparta resident, and if I were on the payroll here I would have made the following suggestion to the mayor and township committee: Inform the people.

All that means is that when you have a big idea, you must give the citizens a heads-up on your plans. Public meetings alone will not do, since a vast majority of people will never attend them. A simple newsletter to all Sparta households outlining the pros and cons of the trash plan and inviting comments would have gone a long way toward defusing the unfair impression that our local government was trying to make a major change in a basic service and damn the constituents if they disagreed.

I am available for further consultation!
